IDW#160 Charon's boat across the river Styx

Managed to crank this one out last minute for the Industrial Design of the Week over at ConceptArt (Charon's boat).

I reckoned it would be cool if the souls that couldn't pay their way would simply be thrown into the river. There they serve Charon, moving his boat across the river Styx, condemned to spend eternity under the surface of her waters. And so Charon needs no paddle, no punt, no other tool than the bell which he rings to call the helping hands of the dead. In this way the boat moves in complete silence, only the bell's toll can be heard from across the mists.

Doombots !

My entry for this week's Industrial Design of the Week (#158) over at ConceptArt. We were supposed to come up with a robot that had wiped-out an entire planetary population. So instead of goin' with the guns & missiles routine I figured it would be cooler to have these robots corrupt and brainwash the aliens into extinction, have annihilation insidiously come from within rather than from some blaze of fireballs you could actually confront.

GameArtsans Comicon & ConceptArt's EOW

Long time no post.  Busy with all sorts of, well pretty much useless bollucks...  Regardless, since the last post I've learned I pulled in second place in the GameArtisans Comicon Challenge (with my Old Man Lobo set), pretty damned sweet.  Unfortunately the advertised prizes have been dropped, I can't help but feel cheated.  :(  Still, must say I'm quite chuffed about it all.

I've also gone back to ConceptArt after a long absence and tried out one of their weekly challenges to practice my environments (don't get to do too many), and I pulled in for a tied first place.  Makin' progress looks like hehe

Couple of easily-spotted mistakes on 'er but in the end that's how you learn :

Study 04 - Anna Lee 02

Another sketch gone awry : I liked the way the study came out so I kept goin' and put in a little extra time on it.  Still, finished it in pretty quick order, so I'm makin' some progress :)  Then again there wasn't much guess-work involved : the top part was ref'ed from a Dwam photo without much change (but hey to be fair this is a study so I'm not bothered).

For those of you (?) paying attention, yes this is AnnaLee from Suicide Girls again.  She said she liked the earlier sketch and wouldn't mind seein' more so I reckon if I'm learnin' somethin' and it makes someone happy as well, I'ld have to be a touch daft or spare not to oblige.

All digital this time (no head-aches with the scanning !)

Gamelofted

Sooo, this Monday I started the new job at Gameloft.  I'd let 'em know a while back I wanted to wait for my contract to end with ODD1 before I made the switch & keep things cool with the old employer, and now here I am.  It was a pretty cool first week, I'm thinkin' I'll like it here.  Of course my introduction to Gameloft was their Christmas party the Friday prior, with their live-band, big loft & generously stocked open-bar, so things started on the right foot.  Nothin' says "hey folks, I'm the new guy" like showin' up at a get-together where no-one knows you & doin' shots with your future team hehe  Good fun in the end.

And what about all the hullabaloo over at Dominance War ?

Skechbook Scratchin's 02

Second instalment, a figure study this time.
Ref'ed from two pictures of the lovely Anna Lee from Suicide Girls.  I'm not sure about the second one but the major photo was taken by Lavezzaro.  *Internet : the poor-man's nude model ! ;) *

The sketch came out a bit dodgy with the scanner so I tried adjusting things a little in photoshop but didn't wanna spend too much time on it, so... It shows up pretty bad down the center where the spine of the book is.  Anyway...  I also added the quote at the bottom left (although the runes were inked by hand).  For those of you who don't read futhark, it says "Muninn", or "memory" (one of Wodan's ravens), followed by "every man is mortal" from the Hávamál.

There she be (acrylics, pencil & ink):

Sketchbook scratchin's 01

For a while now I've been wantin' to set time aside to get a page drawn in everyday in my sketchbook.  Somethin' under an hour, maybe two if I lose track as I tend to do.  Nothin' fancy but it's still complicated to make things happen.  Recently I've only gotten a few in, but it's a good idea none the less so I'm thinkin' I should post a few half-decent ones along the way, maybe force my hand at keepin 'some consistency goin'.  Anyway, here's a chainsaw.  Acrylics & pencils.
